Many female run organizations, such as the Association of University Women offer scholarships for women who have taken time off to raise a family. The Emerge Scholarship Program began in 2001, and since that year the program has given out in excess of $100,000 in awards to many women who are in pursuit of their educational goals. There is only a small number of these scholarships given out to women each year, and the total amount of each of the awards varies each year, as well. These scholarships for women are for those who are 25 years old or older, and who possess certain qualities as set forth by the scholarship program’s selection committee.These qualities include such things as the person’s involvement in her community, the person’s desire and determination to succeed and her passion for her educational and career goals.

Such women as those who have been on a break from their jobs or schooling and want to return to school, or stay-at-home moms who would like to begin a career possess all of these qualities. Women who want to change their jobs or women who want to advance in their jobs are also some ideal candidates for these awards. Any woman may apply for these scholarships; however, the committee gives a distinct preference for those women who wish to go to an educational facility located within the state of Georgia. In order to be eligible for one of these scholarships, the person must be already enrolled in a certified college and be at least 25 years old on the date of her application.

Applications can be obtained through leadershipaustin.org and must be turned in no later than early January. All applicants will receive an email by mid February as to the committee’s decisions regarding their applications. These scholarships are not intended for those students who have just graduated from high school. Nor are they intended for students who have received any other forms of financial assistance or students who are eligible for other forms of financial assistance. Many things determine which persons will receive these awards. The student’s specific financial needs, the student’s educational and career goals, the content of a required essay, the student’s participation in any community activities and any awards or honors that the applicant has received are all considered in determining the winners of these scholarships. The committee announces the winners of these scholarships at a special lunch in early March of which the winners must be present in order to accept their awards. All expenses for the trip to this lunch in the Georgia area are paid for by Emerge.

The Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund is available to mature, lower income women working on an Associate’s degree, first Bachelor’s degree, or enrolled in a vocational college. Jeannette Rankin was an advocate for women’s rights, the first woman ever elected to Congress, and the only woman ever elected to represent Montana. She lived from 1880 to 1973. Upon her death she bequeathed part of her estate to help fund the education of older, unemployed women. A foundation was set up by a group of friends and associates in her honor. The first scholarship for women was awarded in 1978 and it has awarded over a million dollars since then. Applicants for the scholarship must be female, over the age of 35, lower income, already enrolled in an accredited college or vocational school, be a U.S. citizen, and have a clear goal of how advancing their education will help themselves, their families, and those around them.

The scholarship fund uses the income guidelines set forth by the Department of Labor in the Lower Living Standards chart. The application is based on financial information for the upcoming year, rather than the past year, so take into consideration any changes such as divorce, loss of benefits, reduction of hours, or other situation that would cause a change in current income. In addition to meeting these basic prerequisites, the selection committee also takes into account the applicant’s goals, plan on how to realize the goal, any special circumstances or hardships, and current financial situation. The application process involves filling out a form, and an essay and references also must be included. The form can be located for download on the fund’s website http://rankinfoundation.org.

Prior to filling out the application the foundation recommends watching their application video, also located on their site. The application must be completed and postmarked no later than March 1st. The scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis. The committee does not discriminate on basis of color, creed, sexual orientation, marital status, gender identity or expression, national origin, physical disability, or religion. Applying for the scholarship does not guarantee an award. In 2010, 38 awards were given out of the 850 applicants. The scholarship is disbursed over 2 semesters. It may be used for direct school expenses such as tuition and books, or incidentals such a living costs, childcare, and transportation. It is important to completely fill out the application with all the requested information. Two copies of all the paperwork are required, as well as two self addressed stamped envelopes. All the copies are placed in one envelope and must be postmarked by March 1st. About 20% of the applications are denied due to not being complete or mailed late. The personal statement essay is a very important part of the application so special care should be taken while writing it. The scholarship winners are chosen in June and notified by telephone. The foundation website also posts a list of winners in July. The financial aid office distributes the scholarship the following fall semester.
